Chair (Lay Non-Executive Board Director)

CILEx Regulation is the independent regulator under the Legal Services Act 2007 for Chartered Legal Executives, committed to proportionate, risk-based regulation in a rapidly changing legal services environment and to widening access to the legal profession. This role offers the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the future of legal regulation in promoting the consumer interest.

We are seeking to appoint a new Chair to lead the Board from October 2021. The successful candidate will be an experienced non-executive director with strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, as well as experience of working in a complex stakeholder environment and will have a firm understanding of the principles of good regulation.

Amid all the uncertainties of a post-pandemic world, the new Chair will need to focus in particular on:

  • shaping the new strategy for 2022 onwards and monitoring and supporting implementation;
  • collaborating with other legal services regulators to enhance service to consumers;
  • further developing the collaborative but independent relationship with CILEx, the professional body.

The Chair’s remuneration will be £40k per annum for an estimated 60 days per year. The appointment, to take effect from October 2021, will be for three years, extendable by agreement for a further three years. Candidates must not be or have been legal practitioners or work in the legal profession.

The Board currently consists of three lay members (including the Chair) and two professional members and has overall responsibility for our strategy, performance and delivering our statutory responsibilities. Board members work well together and the 2020 performance assessment from the oversight regulator concluded, “Overall, CILEx Regulation continues to perform strongly against the [performance] outcomes.”

A candidate brief about the role, the organisation, our goals and the application process can be found here.
