Exemptions

Recognition of Prior Legal Qualifications as part of your application to become a Chartered Legal Executive or CILEX Practitioner

If you are an authorised person recognised by another approved regulator, we will admit you as a Chartered Legal Executive in the relevant specialist area without re-assessment of knowledge and skills, experience, and competence.

Other approved regulators are as follows:

  • Bar Standards Board (BSB)
  • Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA)
  • Intellectual Property Regulation Board (IPREG)
  • Council for Licenced Conveyancers (CLC)
  • Cost Lawyers Standards Board (CLSB)
  • Master of Faculties
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICEAW)

If you would like to gain admittance as a Chartered Legal Executive in the relevant specialist area by following this route, please submit:

  • your current practicing certificate from your approved regulator; and
  • a completed Education Standards – Chartered Legal Executive Application Form which can be found on the CRL website at: Resources Archive – CILEx Regulation.

When completing the application form, you will need to complete the following sections:

  • Part 1 – Personal Information
  • Part 3 – Pathway
  • Part 4 – Employment
  • Part 6 – Prior Conduct
  • Part 7 – Declaration
  • Part 8 – Employer’s declaration
  • Part 9 – Payment

Please note, if you are seeking to transfer rights of audience from your current regulator, you will be requested to provide additional information.  This information will be requested once we have received your initial application.

Fees

An invoice for a pro-rata Practicing Certificate Fee will be raised for you.  This invoice must be settled before we can issue you with a CRL Practicing Certificate.  The fee amount will depend on the calendar month in which your application is authorised.
