Annual practising certificate fee consultation launched

We have published the annual joint consultation with CILEX on proposals for the practising certificate fee for 2023.

The main features include:

  • holding the practising certificate fee at the 2022 level – against the backdrop of rising inflation with the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) currently at 9.4%;
  • CRL’s proposal to rebalance the costs of regulation across the whole of the CILEX regulated community and;
  • CILEX’s proposal to replace the physical practising certificate with a digital ‘badge’.

The fee, which is used to fund the regulatory activities of CILEx Regulation Limited and CILEX, helps to regulate over 17,000 CILEX members as well as 68 firms.

In the first six months of this year alone, CILEx Regulation, the independent organisation which undertakes regulation on behalf of CILEX, approved over 400 qualifying employment applications, authorised 324 chartered legal executives and 29 firms, and supported nearly 2,500 CILEX members to meet their Continuing Professional Development obligations.

As part of its regulatory function, CILEx Regulation also works on a range of activities to increase consumer empowerment of legal services, improve the public’s knowledge of the law through various public legal education programmes, and encourage a more diverse and inclusive legal profession.

Members of the regulated community are invited to respond to the proposals set out in the consultation by 5pm on Wednesday 31 August 2022.
