CILEx Regulation responds to LSB reform plans

The Legal Services Board (LSB) has accepted the recommendations of the independent Public Bodies Review and outlined a range of proposed reforms.  These include taking action to identify and tackle risks in the legal services market at an earlier stage, more targeted oversight of legal regulators, improvements to complaints handling and support for innovation that helps make legal services more accessible and affordable for consumers.

Jonathan Rees, CILEx Regulation chair commented:

“We welcome the report from Richard Lloyd and the broad acceptance of his recommendations by both the Ministry of Justice and the Legal Services Board. We think the time is right for a full review of the regulatory framework in the Legal Services Act 2007, to create a regime fit for the 2030s.

Our own view, informed by research we commissioned on unregulated legal providers, is that the new regime should be more risk-based, proportionate, transparent and independent. In the meantime, we are committed to working collaboratively with the LSB and other regulators, to make the existing system work better for consumers.”
